Cultivating Culture: How ART Magazine is Redefining Sri Lankan Aesthetics

ART Magazine is a premier publication dedicated to Sri Lankan art, architecture, heritage, and cultural tourism. Since its inception in 2010, ART Magazine has established itself as more than just a publication; it has become a central hub for Sri Lankan art, architecture, heritage, and cultural tourism. Acting as a bridge between the island’s deep historical roots and its modern creative future, the magazine offers readers a comprehensive view of the country’s cultural identity.

A Visionary Foundation The publication was conceived by Chathuranga Biyagama, a multifaceted creative force who combines the insight of a strategic marketer with the creativity of an international artist. An award-winning artist who has reached international forums since 2003, Chathuranga Biyagama is also a gallerist, curator, and designer. His founding vision was clear: to develop a sustainable art culture in Sri Lanka while promoting the island’s aesthetic heritage as a key driver of cultural tourism.

Democratizing Art Unlike platforms focused solely on commercial sales, ART Magazine is strategically designed to build a true aesthetic foundation for South Asia. It operates on the philosophy that art belongs to every social level and class, not just the elite. By broadening the scope beyond modern and contemporary styles to include traditional heritage, the magazine aims to uplift the aesthetic morals of society, making art accessible, understandable, and meaningful to the general public.

ART Media & Global Outreach To support this mission, the publication operates ART Media, a multimedia platform developed for specialized coverage of aesthetics. Through this initiative, the organization has expanded its footprint significantly:

·        Critical Discourse: It publishes research-based articles and critic journals that document art and architectural history.

·        Regional Connections: The platform organizes art exchange programs across the South Asian region to foster cross-border creativity.

·        Documenting Legends: In 2023, the magazine launched its “Master Artist Conversations” series. This project documents the lives and philosophies of legends such as Senaka SenanayakeS.H. SarathIromie WijewardenaRaja Segar, and Seevali Illangasinghe.

A Global Ambition By simplifying complex artistic concepts into stories that resonate with the public, ART Magazine is successfully capturing global attention for Sri Lankan talent. It stands as a testament to the power of culture, ensuring that Sri Lankan traditions thrive for generations to come while positioning the nation as a premier destination for cultural tourism.
